New Perspectives: Hannah and Aidan’s LEAP Journey So Far

At Russell Standard, we believe that continued learning and professional growth are essential to moving our industry forward. One of the best ways to grow is by stepping outside of our everyday roles and gaining a better understanding of the many people, processes, and technologies that support the work we do. 

That’s exactly what Hannah Smiley, Product Development Supervisor, and Aidan Ketterer, Procurement Coordinator, are doing as participants in the Asphalt Emulsion Manufacturers Association’s (AEMA) Leadership Education and Advancement Program (LEAP).

LEAP is a yearlong program designed to expand participants’ knowledge of the asphalt emulsion industry while developing future industry leaders. Through educational sessions, facility tours, jobsite visits, and opportunities to connect with professionals across the industry, participants gain a firsthand look at the materials, innovation, and collaboration that drive asphalt emulsion applications.

For Hannah and Aidan, the experience has already provided a chance to see the industry from a broader perspective.

Learning Beyond the Day-to-Day

One of the most valuable parts of LEAP has been the opportunity to experience different aspects of the industry that they wouldn’t normally interact with or see up close. 

For Hannah, the program has reinforced how interconnected every part of the asphalt emulsion industry truly is. "Working on the technical side, I've been able to see how each component, from aggregates and asphalt binders to additives and chemicals, plays a critical role in the quality and performance of the finished product," Hannah said. "Even small changes in one area can have a significant impact on the overall outcome."

Aidan, who works in procurement for Russell Standard, has gained a new appreciation for the science and innovation behind the materials used every day.

"I've been surprised by how much science goes into the roads we drive on every day," he said. "I've also learned more about the different chemical industries that support asphalt and how many of those companies provide products for other industries as well, like cosmetics and carpet."

Seeing the Industry in Action

While classroom learning has been valuable, some of the most memorable moments so far have come from visiting the facilities where the industry comes to life.

For Hannah, the Marathon Refinery tour and the Heritage Research Group (HRG), Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and US Aggregates tour have been highlights of the program so far. "The Marathon tour provided a firsthand look at how an asphalt refinery operates and the scale of production involved," Hannah said. "It was eye-opening to see the amount of work and coordination required to produce the materials that support our industry."

The HRG and US Aggregates visit offered another unique perspective, combining research, innovation, pavement preservation, and raw material production.

"Seeing pavement preservation on a world-famous racetrack and watching a quarry blast at US Aggregates gave me a greater appreciation for the entire process, from raw materials to final application," she said.

For Aidan, the Bergkamp tour was a standout experience. "Since I started on our equipment side, it was really interesting to see new versions of the pugmill, including the Journeyman, and learn how different equipment is designed, tested, and made," he said.

The tour provided a valuable behind-the-scenes look at the engineering and innovation that goes into the equipment used in the field.

Building Connections Along the Way

Beyond the technical knowledge, both Hannah and Aidan have embraced the opportunity to connect with professionals throughout the asphalt emulsion industry.

"The most valuable takeaway so far has been creating long-term professional relationships with peers and industry leaders from different parts of the asphalt emulsion industry," Hannah said.

Those relationships are an important part of LEAP’s impact. They create opportunities for participants to share experiences, learn from one another, and build connections that can last throughout their careers.

Looking Ahead

Although Hannah and Aidan are only partway through the LEAP program, they are already seeing the benefits of the experience and are excited about what’s still to come. The remaining sessions, tours, and conversations will continue to expand their understanding of the asphalt emulsion industry and provide new opportunities to learn from others across the field.

Both encourage those who are interested in growing their industry knowledge and leadership skills to consider participating in future LEAP classes. "Take the opportunity to get that leadership experience and see all the facets of the industry," Hannah said. "Make those connections because they will be so beneficial to your career."

Aidan offered similar advice: "Sign up. You’ll learn a lot, meet amazing people, and get to tour facilities that give you a wide view of our industry."

As Hannah and Aidan continue their LEAP journey, they are bringing new perspectives back to Russell Standard while gaining a deeper appreciation for the innovation, collaboration, and expertise that make our industry successful. We look forward to seeing where the rest of the program takes them!
